Contrary to popular belief, chickens don't just stay on the ground.
Depending on their breed, size, and temperament, they can be capable of overcoming surprisingly high obstacles. This ability can sometimes cause problems for breeders, especially when the poultry escape from their enclosure.

A chicken can jump very high
Depending on its breed and size, a chicken can jump very high, sometimes over a meter.
To reach a perch or cross a fence, it frantically flaps its wings and manages to take off for a short distance. Most chickens can easily clear a height of about 1 meter.
However, some smaller and more energetic breeds than the classic brown laying hens can reach a height of 1.50 m, 2 m, or even more!
Preventing chickens from flying away
To prevent chickens from flying away and escaping, it is recommended to clip the feathers of one wing at least once a year. This imbalance makes it more difficult for the chicken to take off.
While this method effectively prevents poultry from traveling long distances, it is sometimes insufficient to prevent them from jumping.
If the enclosure or the sides of your outdoor aviary are not high enough, the chickens will still be able to escape by going over the top.
Install a sufficiently high aviary netting
To prevent chickens from jumping over the sides of their enclosure, it is important to install a sufficiently high aviary net.
Small chicken nets sold in kits are usually not high enough, as they often measure between 80 cm and 1.20 m in height.
Around your coop, install an aviary net at least 1.80 m high. Fix it to wooden or metal posts securely anchored in the ground to ensure good resistance.
Close the top of the enclosure
If you want to guarantee that your chickens will not escape by jumping over the net, it is advisable to completely close your outdoor aviary.
Place an aviary net over the enclosure and fix it all around the structure.
The net has the advantage of being flexible and lightweight. It is therefore easier to install than rigid mesh or a sheet metal roof.
Most of our aviary nets are available in large sizes. A single net can thus be enough to surround your coop and be folded over the top of the aviary to close it completely.
In addition to preventing chickens from jumping and escaping, it also acts as a bird net, preventing wild birds from pecking at the food of your chickens and other poultry.
