Contrary to popular belief, chickens don't just stay on the ground.
Even if they don't fly like wild birds, they are capable of short flights and overcoming surprisingly high obstacles. This ability varies depending on the breed, weight, and temperament of each chicken.

How high can a chicken jump?
A chicken's jumping height primarily depends on its morphology. Heavy breeds, such as the Brahma or Cochin, are generally less agile and jump lower than light and dynamic breeds.
On average, a chicken can clear a fence of about 1 meter in height without much difficulty. To do this, it uses powerful wingbeats that allow it to gain momentum and travel a short distance in the air.
However, some smaller and more athletic breeds can go much further. Under good conditions, a chicken can reach 1.50 to 2 meters in height, or even more for the most active individuals.
This ability explains why many chickens manage to leave an enclosure that was considered sufficiently secure.
How to prevent a chicken from jumping over a fence?
To prevent chickens from flying away and escaping, it is recommended to clip the feathers of one wing at least once a year. This unbalances the chicken, making it more difficult for them to take off.
While this method effectively prevents poultry from traveling long distances, it is sometimes insufficient to prevent them from jumping.
If the enclosure or the sides of your outdoor aviary are not high enough, chickens can still escape by going over them.
To limit escapes, it is recommended to install a protective barrier of at least 1.80 meters in height around the chicken coop. It is also important to avoid placing perches, stumps, or feeders near fences, as chickens can use them as a foothold to gain height.
However, the most effective solution remains the installation of a suitable aviary net. By surrounding the enclosure and, if possible, also closing the top, it becomes practically impossible for chickens to jump or fly out of their space.
Install an aviary net that is high enough
To prevent chickens from jumping over the sides of their enclosure, it is important to install an aviary net that is high enough.
Small chicken nets sold in kits are generally not high enough, as they often measure between 80 cm and 1.20 m in height.
Around your chicken coop, install an aviary net at least 1.80 m high. Secure it to wooden or metal posts solidly anchored in the ground to ensure good resistance.
Close the top of the enclosure
If you want to guarantee that your chickens will not escape by jumping over the net, it is advisable to completely close your outdoor aviary.
Place an aviary net over the enclosure and secure it around the entire structure.
The net has the advantage of being flexible and lightweight. It is therefore easier to install than rigid wire mesh or a sheet metal roof.
Most of our aviary nets are available in large sizes. A single net can thus be enough to surround your chicken coop and be folded over the top of the aviary to completely close it.
In addition to preventing chickens from jumping and escaping, it also acts as a bird netting, preventing wild birds from pecking at the food of your chickens and other poultry.
