How to build an inexpensive outdoor aviary?

Building an outdoor aviary can quickly become costly if solid materials are used (wood, concrete blocks, rigid roofing). A simple, economical, and quick alternative is to use an aviary net on a lightweight wooden or metal structure.
This article explains how to design an inexpensive outdoor aviary, focusing on a lightweight structure and the use of an aviary net, while ensuring the comfort and safety of the animals.
Prioritize a lightweight structure
To shelter animals from wind and cold, one might be tempted to design an outdoor aviary with at least one closed side, or even more. But building an aviary with solid materials can be very expensive and time-consuming.
Building a concrete block wall requires masonry work and sometimes a minimum of excavation, to lay the first row stably and perfectly level.
The same applies to a solid and rigid structure, whatever the chosen solution: wooden cladding, steel sheet roofing, etc.
Installing wire mesh is already a more economical solution than solid structures. But there is an even more economical alternative!
Build an inexpensive aviary with a net
To build an inexpensive outdoor aviary yourself, quickly and easily, the aviary net is an ideal solution. Flexible and lightweight, made with resistant knotted meshes, it prevents chickens, pigeons, and other poultry from escaping.
Step 1: Create the frame
The first step is to create a stable and robust frame on which to fix the net.
A wooden or metal structure is generally chosen.
Depending on the size of the aviary, the birds it will house, and the desired result, this frame can be more or less complex.
In all cases, it is recommended to place posts at all four corners, then add intermediate reinforcements if necessary. The structure can also be reinforced with bars at ground level and at the top.
Remember to plan for a door for easy access to the aviary and to feed the animals.
Step 2: Install the aviary net
The aviary net is flexible and lightweight, which allows it to be easily positioned and adjusted on the pre-built structure.
Fix it securely to the frame by attaching it along its entire length.
To properly close the sides, the net must be taut and not form pockets.
Step 3: Arrange the interior
Remember to arrange your outdoor aviary to make it comfortable and pleasant for your animals.
Install a shelter, such as a chicken coop, nest boxes, or even natural branches to allow birds to perch.
Step 4: Close the top of the aviary
To close the top of your outdoor aviary, several options are available.
If the aviary is small and there is no integrated shelter, you can install a sturdy tarp on top to protect the animals from rain. The downside is that a tarp can be damaged in strong winds.
You can also close the top with a net, identical to the one used for the sides or with wider meshes depending on the species raised.
A wide-mesh net installed on top is sufficient, for example, to prevent a duck or goose from flying away.
