Why does the catamaran net seem smaller than the space it's supposed to fill?

Table of contents

You ordered and received your net, but now you notice something that catches your eye: it seems much smaller than the space to be filled. Is this normal? Is it a manufacturing defect?

Don't panic, this is normal. The net is designed to be taut when installed: you have to pull it so that it perfectly adapts to the area to be covered.

In this short practical guide, we explain everything.

Do not take a net that is too large

You might be tempted to choose a net with exact dimensions for the space to be filled. In reality, that would be a mistake.

Let's take an example: you are creating a 2m x 3m opening to install a habitation net and create a bright relaxation area upstairs.

You absolutely must not order a 2m x 3m net. It would be too big once installed.

Why? Because a net is made of textile fiber. Unlike wood or metal, the material will work: it becomes taut during installation, then relaxes slightly over time. If the net is dimensioned exactly like the opening, it cannot be properly stretched and will not remain perfectly adjusted.

To obtain an optimal result, we apply a precise manufacturing ratio to calculate the ideal dimension of the net before tensioning. This coefficient varies according to the use: a mezzanine net designed to support weight is not dimensioned in the same way as a railing net designed to secure a staircase.

That's why, at Corderie Gautier, each net is custom-made and each project is studied individually.

Installation like on catamarans

Boating enthusiasts and experienced catamaran owners know this well: on a multihull sailboat, when a new catamaran net is installed, it always seems too small compared to the space to be filled. Yet once installed, the net remains perfectly in place for many years.

Each sailor has their tricks: soaking the net with seawater, planning the installation in several phases... Again, this will depend on the type of net chosen.

Specialists in marine ropes such as halyards, sheets, and mooring lines, we also produce catamaran trampolines.

For home improvement projects and the installation of your habitation net, both indoors and outdoors, we therefore draw inspiration from these nautical techniques.

Catamaran net installation tip

To facilitate tensioning, always start by fixing the four corners of the net. Then, gradually work along the lengths, alternating from one side to the other to distribute the tension evenly. Do not try to tighten everything on one side: balanced tension allows the net to settle naturally and perfectly fit the structure.

💡 A tip from our experts: Let the net settle for a few hours after initial tensioning, then re-tension slightly if necessary. This ensures a perfectly adjusted and durable result.

A properly installed catamaran net is very taut

During the installation phase of your habitation net, it must be properly taut. This step must be carried out rigorously.

A poorly tensioned or poorly fixed net risks deforming and being damaged. Its lifespan will then be reduced, comfort diminished, and you might quickly be disappointed with your purchase.
