The stated length corresponds to the finished rope, including thimble and weighting knot. The bottom of the rope should remain approximately 30 to 40 cm from the ground. Natural hemp shrinks slightly upon initial tensioning: allow for this margin.
Step 2 — Choose the diameter
On a smooth rope, the diameter directly changes the difficulty of the exercise. A moderate diameter closes in the hand and facilitates climbing; a large diameter forces an open-hand grip and becomes a true test of grip strength. For the same diameter, natural hemp is significantly heavier than synthetic.
| Diameter | Audience and use | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| 28 mm — best seller | Gyms, clubs, cross-training, climbing initiation | Full hand grip, accessible climb |
| 36 mm | Gymnasiums, barracks, obstacle courses, intensive collective use | More demanding grip, forearm workout |
| 40 mm | Advanced physical preparation, grip strength, grip training | Maximum difficulty, reserved for experienced practitioners |
For a facility catering to all levels, 28 mm remains the best compromise. 36 mm is the standard for institutional installations.
Step 3 — Choose the finish
The top finish determines the attachment method, the bottom finish determines the appearance and weighting of the free end.
| Finish | Description | Recommended for |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel thimble | Splice on thimble, protects the rope from the anchor point | Standard, included by default |
| Ring + stainless steel thimble | Stainless steel ring, direct attachment to hook or plate | Fixed installation in a gym |
| Simple spliced loop | Handmade loop, without metal | Passing around a beam or bar |
| Stainless steel bow shackle | Quick disassembly, adjustable height | Rope regularly unhooked or stored off-season |
| Large rope knot at the bottom | Weights the end and extends its longevity | Standard, included by default |
| Whipped bottom end | Flat finish, no weighting | Ropes descending very close to the ground |

Smooth natural hemp climbing rope
Rope climbing exercise
Smooth rope climbing is an intense physical exercise, made popular by firefighters, police officers, and the military. It engages the entire upper body — hands, forearms, back, shoulder girdle — but also the legs, which grip and lock the rope to progress. Without knots to rest on, the difficulty increases considerably compared to a knotted rope: climbing requires real physical fitness, especially in terms of speed.
It is the benchmark equipment in fitness rooms, obstacle courses, cross-training boxes, gymnasiums, and fire stations.
The grip of the original fiber
On a smooth rope, the grip makes all the difference: it allows you to hold the position with arms extended and lock the legs without slipping. Natural hemp offers a grip that no synthetic fiber can provide. Its slightly rough surface bites into the palm and sole, even during a long hold, and gradually softens with use without ever becoming smooth.
Natural hemp or synthetic hemp?
Natural hemp offers the true look, smell, and feel, as well as a better grip: it's the choice for gyms that want the original rope. On the other hand, it is a living fiber that absorbs moisture, dries slowly, and eventually mildews with permanent exposure. Reserve it for indoor use or under shelter. For a durable outdoor installation, opt for our smooth rope made of synthetic hemp, which is rot-proof and UV-treated.
Handcrafted French manufacturing
Each rope is handcrafted in our workshops. The upper end is fitted with a stainless steel thimble, very resistant and rust-proof, which facilitates attachment and protects the rope from the anchor point. The lower end finishes with a large rope knot that weights the end and prolongs its longevity. The splices are made manually, without adding any plastic parts.
Safety
Smooth ropes present a greater risk of falling than knotted ropes: descent is via controlled sliding, and fatigue quickly sets in. Clear the climbing area and install a shock-absorbing landing surface under the rope, such as a large gymnastics mat. For less experienced users, provide a harness and a rappelling rope. Natural hemp requires more frequent checks than synthetic fibers: regularly inspect the condition of the strands, the thimble, and the anchor point, especially after exposure to humidity. Rope supplied with its usage precautions.
