Size guide

How to choose the size of your hay net?

  • 100 mm mesh: limit hay waste, introduce the net to horses.
  • 60 mm mesh: slow down forage intake and prepare the horse for slow feeding.
  • 45 mm mesh: slow feeding.
  • 30 mm mesh: intensify slow feeding, for horses that handle it very well.

In summary: the smaller the mesh size, the more forage intake is slowed down to reinforce the practice of slow feeding.

Care advice
  • Remove small branches, roots, and debris from the net.
  • Wash with clear, cold water.
  • If the hay net is very dirty, wash it with a little Marseille soap or black soap.
  • Never use laundry detergent, cleaning agents, fabric softener, or bleach.

Small mesh and slow feeding

A hay net with small mesh is ideal for practicing slow feeding.
It mechanically reduces the speed of forage intake, which offers numerous health benefits for the horse:

  • Fewer colics
  • Better digestion
  • Reduced stress
  • Feeding on demand throughout the day

The 30 mm small mesh makes our hay nets effective slow feeders.
Intensive slow feeding should be reserved for horses that are already accustomed to it. If you want to start slow feeding, order a hay net with larger 100 mm mesh.

Which mesh size should I choose to slow down hay consumption?

With a small-mesh hay net, the principle is simple: the tighter the mesh, the more time the horse must take to pull out strands of hay.

  • 60 mm mesh: ideal for starting to slow down intake and gradually preparing the horse for slow feeding.
  • 45 mm mesh: the format adapted for slow feeding.
  • 35 mm mesh: to further increase the slowing effect for horses already well accustomed to this feeding method.
