Dyneema Oversheath
For all your ropes subjected to regular chafe, such as passing through rings, sailboat sheaves, pulleys, stoppers, winches, etc., the high-modulus polyethylene overbraid (Dyneema brand) is the ideal protection.
This textile fiber has excellent abrasion resistance as well as UV resistance, thus extending the lifespan of your ropes.
To protect a halyard at the masthead, shrouds, or sheets of headsails, the Dyneema overbraid is perfect.
Overbraiding a halyard or other rope is relatively simple even if you are not used to splicing: a little time, patience, and a splicing needle.
For effective and simple overbraiding of your ropes against chafe, only overbraid the parts to be protected from friction; there is no need to cover your entire rope.
As its name suggests, the overbraid is therefore a third layer of rope: core, cover, overbraid.
Choosing your overbraid
To protect a halyard or a rope on your vessel, you actually need to choose an overbraid of the same diameter as the rope for which it is intended.
For example, if you want to overbraid a 10mm diameter polyester halyard, you need to choose a 10mm Dyneema overbraid.
Your overbraid should not have a larger diameter than your rope, because during handling and maneuvers, it could move, bunch up in places, and thus bother you on the boat.
Note that the Dyneema fiber, while very technical, high-performance, and offering excellent abrasion resistance... is also very slippery!
It should therefore be used to protect your ropes against chafe, not for all types of overbraiding. It is not at all suitable for stoppers.
Safety on board
Some people use this overbraid as a lifeline strap. This allows for lighter weight, but also because this overbraid has excellent abrasion resistance.
